Cikarang, sinar–berita.com|Decarbonisation is one of several sustainability commitments in ‘L’Oréal for the Future’ programme. In 2023, as part of its ongoing efforts to eliminate gas use in its plants, L’Oréal Indonesia will begin adopting innovative technologies to replace traditional carbon-emitting fuels such as biomass, gas, or petroleum.
L’Oréal Indonesia Factory Director Hassan Asif stated in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, Friday (8/3/2024), L’Oréal has adopted a two-pronged approach to limit carbon footprint, reduce emissions from industrial sites by increasing renewable energy procurement locally, and increase energy efficiency in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.
“We have optimised water use across our plant operations as part of L’Oréal’s production journey to become a Waterloop plant by 2026, and helped protect the biodiversity around the plant, which has 37% green area, by embracing innovative solutions, taking proactive steps to reduce its operational impact on the global environment.
Hassan Asif continued, L’Oréal is also committed to making a positive contribution to Indonesian society in addition to its business activities. This is reflected through corporate programmes such as L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science and L’Oréal Beauty for a Better Life, which provide funding for women researchers and provide free intensive beauty training programmes, to empower women facing socio-economic barriers
“We believe this is the only way to ensure our activities respect planetary boundaries and science-based targets,” he said.

In tackling social challenges, Hassan Asif explained that L’Oréal brands are taking an active role such as L’Oréal Paris StandUp Against Street Harassment and mental health awareness program, Maybelline Brave Together.
“Through these various social programs, we (L’Oreal) have empowered more than 800,000 beneficiaries throughout Indonesia. The achievements we celebrate today cannot escape the support of all our stakeholders including the government, business partners and all our employees,” he concluded.
He explained that the installation of electric boilers was carefully selected through in-depth studies conducted by leading sustainability consultants, namely ENGIE Impact, Tractabel Engineering and ERM (Environmental Resources Management).
Ivan Li, Director of Sustainable Solutions at ENGIE Impact, said: “We conducted an in-depth study identifying strategies, including the rapid implementation of energy efficiency measures and switching from gas boilers to electric boilers, using environmentally friendly electricity to achieve the goal of 100% renewable energy for L’Oréal Indonesia Plant.

“The successful implementation of these measures is a testament to the investment level roadmap established from the outset and the shared commitment between our organizations to accelerate decarbonization efforts.”
